Kabul Goes Kaboom
A few hours ago, I was notified that the areas around ISAF HQ, the US Embassy, etc. had come under major attack. Boy, they weren’t kidding. That was four hours ago, and things are still going off. This is definitely the worst fighting to hit Kabul since the war began. It’s tough to say how many villains are out there, but reports say they’ve used multiple suicide bombers, various indirect fire systems, the usual AK’s and PKM’s, and at least one 82mm recoilless rifle, the last of which which they reportedly set up in a multi-story, unfinished building off Abdul Haq Circle, directly overlooking ISAF HQ.
I’ll have to post a full run-down of the attack when it’s over, but a few points I’d like to make:
1. Hey, was I not right? I said several posts ago (I think it was the Intercontinental attack post) that this summer was going to end with a spectacular attack. Babatim is predicting this attack will go down in history as similar to Tet. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
2. After we whacked bin Laden, I predicted to a friend that the Pakistanis would have their revenge on us. If this attack was carried out by the Taliban, I’ll be a monkey’s uncle. No matter what the Taliban claims, this smells like the work of the Haqqanis, ISI’s favorite proxy in Afghanistan.
3. It will be interesting to see how the Afghans did, once we get an AAR on the attack. I saw Afghan military Mi-24′s go screaming by about 30 minutes ago. I hear they went and tore up a bunch of villains. They looked like they meant business, so I hope they were able to successfully clear out the attackers. Their success could be the good news story of the day.
Anyway, I might be stuck here in my office for the night, so I might as well try to post some updates later if I get any new info.
UPDATE: Clearing operations are still going on at Abdul Haq Circle, almost 6 1/2 hours after the attack began. I’m getting some disturbing RUMINT that the attacks are only half over and the villains have guys stashed all over the city, poised to stage more attacks tonight. Not sure what to make of the reports, but if there’s any truth to them, we all might want to buckle up. It’s going to be a bumpy night.
